We already have options to show different things in the statusbar
ui_statusbar_no_sel
and other ui_statusbar_*

EDIT
Now I see that you mean new "macro" for length of selection(s). it may be addition to one of next versions, okay.

next version 1.100 will have new macro {selchars} for this task.
