Possible Bug: Disk Write Bytes Keep Increasing

Post by katwalk »

I think I’ve found a possible disk write issue:

I open around 20 lightweight files (all just a few KB), even without editing very much, CudaText’s “Disk write bytes” keeps going up nonstop.

After running for about half a day, the total writes are already in the GB range. I’ve even seen one long run go past 20GB. For a text editor, that amount of background writing while sitting idle doesn’t seem reasonable.

Here are the monitoring screenshots:

set this user.json option:

"ui_session_save_interval": 0,

and try again. I guess that session saving does that 'writing'.

also I asked the Qwen AI how to find which files 'cudatext.exe' is writing to.
To monitor which files cudatext.exe is writing to during high disk activity, use these Windows tools (in order of effectiveness):

1. Process Monitor (ProcMon) – Recommended ✅
This free Microsoft Sysinternals tool shows real-time file system activity per process with full path details:

Code: Select all

    Download from: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon
    Run as Administrator
    Start capture (magnifying glass icon)
    Set a filter:
Process Name is cudatext.exe → Include → Add → OK
    Reproduce the high-write activity
    In the results view:
Look for "WriteFile" or "CreateFile" operations with "SUCCESS" result
The "Path" column shows the exact files being written
Use Tools → File Summary to aggregate writes by file path
2. Resource Monitor – Built-in Alternative
Less detailed but requires no installation:

Code: Select all

    Press Win+R → type resmon → Enter
    Go to Disk tab
Under "Disk Activity", filter by cudatext.exe
Shows files currently being accessed (but limited history/aggregation)

The change has taken effect.

I set "ui_session_save_interval": 0 in user.json, and the constant write activity is gone. It is now as calm as a lake in winter.

Screen recording (Before):

Screen recording (After):

Everything looks good for now. If anything unusual comes up later, I will share an update. Thanks for the support.
